World Heart Day is commemorated every year on September 29. This year, national heart care organisation Yayasan Jantung Indonesia (YJI) organised various simultaneous events in 16 major cities across the country including Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and Jayapura, to raise public awareness for cardiovascular diseases.

In Jakarta, more than 5,000 participants of all ages flocked to Stadion Gelora Bung Karno, where medical staff checked their blood pressure, blood sugar level and general heart condition with equipment provided by Omron Healthcare Indonesia. The medical staff was also happy to answer any questions related to the issue. Healthy exercises to strengthen the heart choreographed by nutritionists, heart experts and sports practitioners complemented the activities. “We hope that more people will pay attention to their heart as heart attacks and strokes continue to be the number one cause of death in Indonesia,” said YJI’s Chairwoman Syahlina Zuhal.
