Spending an afternoon drinking tea and nibbling on snacks and other delicacies is as good as it gets – the Gran Melia Hotel Jakarta offers guests high tea packages in its cozy Lobby Lounge.

High tea is a cherished British tradition, dating back to the mid 1700s as an afternoon meal which was initially served for the working men but was quickly adopted as quintessential English lifestyle. Sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and preserves, and of course a wide selection of tea make for a delightful British high tea session.

While Gran Melia presented British India High Tea in the month of March, the hotel focuses on Imperial Vienna High Tea in April. However, unlike their British counterparts, Austrians often prefer to have a cup of coffee – the Viennese coffee house culture is world-famous and was even listed as “Intangible Cultural Heritage” in 2011.

Austrian writer Stefan Zweig described the Viennese Coffee House as an institution of a special kind, «actually a sort of democratic club […] where every guest can sit for hours with this little offering, to talk, write, play cards, receive post, and above all consume an unlimited number of newspapers and journals.”

Between 3 and 6 PM until April 28, guests can enjoy the popular Austrian sacher cake, Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) and Gugelhupf at the Lobby Lounge, while sipping a hot cup of coffee to wind down after a hectic day.

And if you still can’t get enough of high tea, come back in May when the hotel introduces the Strawberry Delights High Tea – sit back, relax and enjoy.
