Online travel booking platform, Traveloka, recently introduced a new application which helps users explore culinary spots around a city, which it believes will make it easier for tourists and locals to plan their dining experiences.

Traveloka Eats is currently available in seven cities in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Bali, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Medan. Traveloka Eats offers a culinary guide with extensive information on hip and popular culinary jaunts in each city, complete with customers’ reviews curated by Traveloka in Food Directory.

It provides more than 8.000 restaurants guide which are divided into 9 types of cuisine, such as Asian, Western, and Indonesian, among others. Moreover, customers can enjoy various exclusive offers courtesy of Traveloka’s restaurant partners when they are exploring Traveloka Eats.

Christian Suwarna, Traveloka Senior Vice President of Business Development said Traveloka Eats is a curation of dining locations which also helps promote signature dishes of the local area. Users can have a complete tourism experience in one application. The new product is also the part of the initiative of industry to support the Ministry of Tourism’s focus on national culinary tourism.

“Traveloka Eats is part of our ongoing innovations to help customers search for restaurants, making it as easy as booking hotels on Traveloka. By adding this new product, we hope to support and enhance customers’ traveling and lifestyle needs,” Suwarna said during a press conference.

Suwarna added that the Traveloka Eats can be a food directory for users who travel to these destinations. The user could bookmark the restaurant as the part of their travel itinerary. Furthermore, the customer will also receive interesting culinary promotions.

Food plays a strategic role in strengthening tourism in Indonesia. According to UNWTO data, in 2013, around 30 to 40 per cent of tourism income was, in fact, contributed by culinary trips. In 2017, culinary income accounted for 30 per cent or equal to IDR 60 billion from a total tourism revenue of IDR 200 billion.

“Along with the mission of the Ministry of Tourism to go digital, we support the launch of Traveloka Eats as one of the new mediums to introduce travel and culinary in one platform. In the future, traveling will be easier and more convenient with the existence of services integrated digitally in one single platform,” Mesakkh said.

Dining out has contributed the highest number toward the creative economy’s gross domestic product. In 2017, it contributed for 42 per cent of total income, well above the fashion industry’s contribution of 18 per cent, while the craft industry ranked third accounting for 15 per cent.
