UOB Indonesia launched the 2018 UOB Painting of the Year (POY), and invited Indonesian artists to join the competition.This year’s event will also focus on supporting the local art industry and involves art workshops for more than 200 underprivileged children in Jakarta and other regions.
The annual event has successfully placed Indonesia on the global stage, since it was first held in 2011. UOB Indonesia will involve previous winners this year including Gatot Indrajati, the winner of the 2016 UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year.
Kevin Lam, President Director of UOB Indonesia said that art plays an important role in enriching people’s lives while also strengthening community ties.
UOB Indonesia also collaborates with artists and art experts to hold art workshops at Bentara Budaya Jakarta and at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Lam added that artists are expected to broaden their perspective on the development of local and global art.
“UOB has consistently supported art development in Southeast Asia through the UOB Painting of the Year competition. We hope to create a positive and sustainable environment, as well as provide the opportunity for Indonesian artists to excel their career in order to be able to inspire to the next generation of Indonesian artist,” Lam said.
According to Lam, POY alumni and current winners will share their knowledge in art workshops for unprivileged children. This way, they hope art will help nurture their creative skills and can empower them.
Competition
The 2018 UOB Painting of the Year is now open for registration until 3 September. Professional as well as amateur artists are welcome to join the competition. Contemporary artist Entang Wiharso, art collector Dr. Wiyu Wahono and art writer Bambang Bujono will be judging at the competition after the artwork is submitted and selected.
Winners of the 2018 UOB Painting of the Year will be announced on 16 October at UOB’s Jakarta office. Later the artwork from the finalists will be exhibited at the National Gallery of Indonesia in November.
Indonesia’s winner will compete with UPB POY winners from Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand at the UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year contest. The winner will have the chance to enroll in a one-month residency programme at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.
