It was developed to broaden the student’s learning experience and has proven to enhance the student-teacher relationship. Being able to apply their classroom knowledge in the real world, students have a better understanding, which supports their academic achievement. Research has shown that children that have been introduced to their local environment and know how to look after it are fare more likely to grow into active citizens in later life. Students, who may struggle academically, profit considerably from activities outside the classroom.

Education Outside The Classroom at Bali Island School

Bali Island School (BIS) – formerly Bali International School – has a well thought through Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC) program. Each year BIS students get the chance to leave their comfort zone and explore activities with their peers and teachers around the island.

All students learn in different ways and connecting academics to authentic experiences and other activities outside the classroom walls deepens understanding. In addition it will enable students to learn more about our host country, Indonesia, and its culture/history as well as develop stronger relationships within their grade group and with their teachers. It is an important component of the student academics at BIS”, explained Denise Walsh, Head of School.

All activities involve the local communities. One example is the visit of the BIS Diploma students to les village, a poor area devastated by a massive volcano eruption in 1963 in the north of Bali. The students interact with the locals and learn their way of life as well as contributing to the development of the area.

The EOTC to Les Village was an experience unlike anything that we had experienced before. As a part of the English teaching group it was amazing to integrate with the local community and learn with the kids as they learnt English. Being given the opportunity to be involved with a continuous school project like this will be one of the highlights of my BIS experience” says Ruby Starr, Grade 12 Student at BIS.

Bali Island School believes that leaving the campus enables students to strengthen their social awareness, their personal development and their relationship building capacity. Outside the classroom students have the possibility to gain self-confidence, to develop leadership and teamwork skills and to contribute to the society.
