Philosophy and Critical Thinking

In celebration of Karl Marx’s bicentennial anniversary, the Goethe-Institut Indonesien, in collaboration with STF Driyarkara, has organised a closed-door seminar with Professor Daniel Loick from the Centre for Humanities & Social Change at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. This seminar will contribute a philosophical and critical thinking on how Karl Marx criticises capitalism, as it develops the productive powers of human societies to historically unprecedented scales. His theory emerges to be more pertinent today in the midst of environmental crisis, chronic unemployment, globalisation and inequality. In these fundamental ways, capitalism is a contradictory social system with endemic tensions, political struggles and potential for change. The seminar will talk about a critical analysis of key texts by focusing on four specific aspects of Marx‘ work: Religion, Capitalism, Rights and Freedom, Politics, and discuss the relevance in the Indonesian context.
