Touted as ‘the world’s most iconic destination’, The Fjords are - perhaps more than anything else - the symbol and soul of traditional Norway. The UNESCO-protected site offers stunning glacial valleys surrounded by high mountains and cascading waterfalls to explore. There are many different ways to enjoy The Fjords, from kayaking and rafting to hiking, glacier walking and Fjord cruises.

Bright dancing lights moving across the Arctic Sky - the Northern Lights or the aurora borealis are indeed a spectacular natural phenomena. The lights are the result of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere. The spectacle of colours can not only be witnessed from the northern part of Norway, but also from other areas on the Scandinavian peninsula.  However, few countries can rival the vast selection of activities, tours, cruises, restaurants and hotels which make this arctic experience complete.

Pulpit Rock or Preikestolen is a popular tourist attraction in the municipality of Forsand in Rogaland County. A square formation of rock resembling a pulpit, it stands 1,981 feet above the Lysefjord. Hiking to the Pulpit Rock plateau - preferably during daylight for a better view, but also for safety reasons - is a fantastic natural experience. Remember to always wear warm clothes and bring extra, just in case. Booking a tour with a local guide is recommended.

Hiking the Glaciers

Glacier hiking is a thrilling - and sometimes challenging - experience and offers a glimpse into Norway’s wild ice and snow landscape. For those with a lesser sense of adventure, marveling at the natural splendor of the glaciers is still quite breathtaking as well. Norway is famous for its magnificent glaciers; in fact it was the Ice Age glaciers that carved out the country’s fjords, valleys and steep mountainsides. Guided hiking is available in major glaciers like Jostedalsbreen in Western Norway or Austfonna in the Svalbard archipelago. Interestingly, some glaciers like Tystigbreen and Folgefonna provide summer ski resorts, where visitors can ski and snowboard in casual clothes under the shining sun.
