The English language production of SHREK THE MUSICAL with the book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize®winner David Lindsay-Abaire, music by Olivier Award-winner Jeanine Tesori as well as costumes by Tony Award® winner Tim Hatley, has come to Jakarta, Indonesia, for the very first time as part of its first ever global tour. It will be playing at the Ciputra Artpreneur Theater for 24 performances only, from May 5 to May 22, 2016. Based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks Animation film that started it all, this live adaptation by DreamWorks Theatricals, Broadway Entertainment Group FZ LLC, and NETworks Presentations LLC brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favourite ogre to the stage. It is slightly more than incredible how Ciputra Artpreneur has managed to successfully bring Broadway to Jakarta, so to speak. Granted there are a lot of things one can see and do in Manhattan, but it costs the equivalent of 5 weekend platinum tickets per person just to fly there. So… Tickets available at Kiostix.com!

Joey

Joey Alexander, this year’s youngest Grammy nominee is set to perform his first and largest ever concert in Indonesia after his Grammy nomination. The 12-year-old Indonesian jazz pianist Joey Alexander will be performing on stage with the legendary jazz drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts and jazz bassist Dan Chmielinski. Joey Alexander is somewhat of a monster too. Two Grammy nominations for Best Improvised Jazz Solo and Best Instrumental Jazz Album at age 12? Such a monstrously incredible achievement makes the fact that he is also the first Indonesian ever to enter the Billboard 200 chart in the United States seem almost insignificant. This Concert will be the first jazz concert in Indonesia presented in HD quality sound design. The concert hall will be laid out in a circular shape where 42 hi-end studio speakers are distributed evenly to give the audience a well-balanced, full, and immersive sound experience. Date/Time: 22 May 2016, 7.00pm Venue: Jiexpo Kemayoran Jakarta Tickets available at Rajakarcis.com

Joey’s parents moved with him to New York City in 2014 in order to support a talent in which Herbie Hancock came to believe after seeing Joey play when he was just 8 years old. It was a concert with students of the Juilliard School which helped fund his continuing stay in New York City. The concert, which has received national media attention on NBC News, was successful enough for Joey to obtain an O-1 visa, granted to “individuals with extraordinary ability”. Maybe, just maybe, if we earlier recognise and better support our artists and their work, we could…something… Personally I look forward to the day when Joey does a 24-city tour in Indonesia or when an Indonesian opera or play enjoys 24 performances “only” in its first tour outside the country after receiving 441 performances in Jakarta. Hope…
