Mi Casa es Casa Mexico

Not that there aren’t any good Mexican restaurants in this pueblo, the problem is there can never be enough. So when news went around that a new restaurante had opened up, one that is slightly hidden away in the urban jungle of Senayan, I was ready to give Casa Mexico and their ‘Sunday Funday’ brunch a try. From what I can remember after muchos free flow of sangria, margaritas y cervezas, the food was excellente and abundante.

Every Sunday there is a different main course. On the day I went with some amigos locos, a complete roast pork was on offer. And I do mean complete, head and all. Those in the know devoured the cheeks. Delicioso! The other week, in celebration of Mexican Independence Day, there was a seafood buffet with all the frutos del mar. And of course, the usual free flow bebidas.

The a la carte menu includes any aficionado of Mexican (Tex-Mex) cuisine’s favorites such as tostadas, quesadillas, burritos, tacos, enchiladas and fajitas. Off the grill you can order camabones prawns cooked in garlic butter sauce served with salsa and Mexican rice. I want to go back and try the puerco en salsa pipian, chunks of pork cooked in a green sauce, also off the grill, served with Mexican rice and refried beans. I’m sure the grilled steaks, pork chops and lamb are bueno as well. Especially if enjoyed with a cold San Miguel dark beer. Yes, that’s right folks. San Miguel dark. Not found just anywhere in this beer void we call home, you know.

The manager of Casa Mexico is well known to expats and Indonesians who don’t mind a tipple alike, Harry McMechen, an American but, when it comes right down to it, can pass as any desperado after a few tequilas and a sombrero. Just call him Pancho.

Any time of the day come in for complimentary chips and homemade salsa, but Harry says look for Casa Mexico’s daily specials, creations of the joint’s own Mexican chef, from Margarita Mondays to Taco Tuesdays. A fun mix of Mexican music plays throughout the day, transitioning into more Latin lounge through the evening and then after dinner anything goes. Just peruse their schedule or drop Harry an email. He knows how to work his social media as well, so Harry will keep you posted. And toasted.

And the décor? Did I forget the décor? Well, needless to say there is lots of Mexican style bric-a-brac, but what makes the Casa Mexico seem more grande than it might be is the open second floor that looks out over the first floor revelers. One of the best conversions of a ruko I have seen. And for such a good cause!

According to Harry, tequila prices may soon be going up so he suggests coming down to enjoy the health benefits of the agave in tequila and Casa Mexico’s full bar as soon as you can. Not to mention “the best Mexican food this side of Tijuana.”
