New Campaign Raises Awareness About Cervical CancerWhat's Happening
Cervical cancer is the leading cause of death among women in developing countries. But the good news is, if diagnosed early, the disease can be treatable.
With that goal in mind, Indonesia’s Coalition of Cervical Cancer Prevention (KICKS)—established by the Indonesian Society of Gynecologic Oncology (INASGO)—has made it its mission to raise public awareness about cervical cancer, which is caused by severe abnormal changes in the uterus cells.
By teaming up with a number of organisations, KICKS hopes to spread the message to a wider audience. Among its partners are Indonesian Working Group on HPV (IWG-HPV), Indonesian Cancer Foundation (Yayasan Kanker Indonesia), Cervical Cancer Care Foundation (Yayasan Peduli Kanker Serviks), Women’s Health Foundation (Yayasan Kesehatan Perempuan), Miss Indonesia Foundation (Yayasan Putri Indonesia) and Kalyanamitra, an organisation that advocates women’s rights, as well as Fatayat Nahdlatul Ulama, a muslim women’s organisation. KICKS is also working closely with celebrities such as Wulan Guritno, Ruben Onsu and Sarwendah and Prilly Latuconsina.
According to Prof. Dr. dr. Andrijono, SpOG(K), Head of Indonesian Society of Gynecologic Oncology, symptoms of cervical cancer are not always obvious. For precaution and prevention, women are thus encouraged to do regular cervical cancer screening (Pap smear), which can detect signs of cervical cancer.
Among the campaigns run by KICKS is the launch of www.cegahkankerserviks.org, a website that contains comprehensive information about symptoms, risks and prevention of cervical cancer. KICKS is also promoting the use of the hashtag #CegahKankerServiks on social media for posts related to the disease. Through these efforts, KICKS seeks to generate wider public interest and knowledge in the issue, and hopefully save more lives.
