ESA Restaurant

One of the new restaurants in Jakarta: ESA Restaurant

Adding to Jakarta’s evening destinations, ESA Restaurant presents a fresh take on a refined dining experience. This stylish venue is the brainchild of three young and passionate culinary professionals who have set out to break the food and beverage boundaries. Experimental and innovative, the menu takes diners on a journey of unexpected flavours.

ESA, meaning ‘one’ in Sanskrit, is a statement from the founders, together embarking on their first (i.e. number one) foray as independent restaurateurs. The collective experience of Chef Aditya Muskita, Jessica Eveline and Kevindra Soemantri rings in a new ‘genre’ of dining, with their ultimate goal being to define the ‘New Jakarta Cuisine’. ESA Restaurant thus aims to represent the Jakarta of today, the modern cosmopolitan, with its melting pot of cultures. Chef Aditya, who has cooked in renowned kitchens like Mozaic and Room 4 Dessert in Ubud to Relae in Copenhagen, Denmark, thus showcases a reimagining of Jakarta’s favourite flavours through both a tasting and a la carte menu.

The 14-course tasting menu is served to the table as a sharing experience, an informal degustation style where an eclectic collection of dishes are served in unison through the amuse bouche, appetiser, mains, dessert and petit fours courses. Diners will likely muse over the creativity of the dishes, from the delicate ‘Foie Gras Parfait’ served with Hoisin-glazed fried dough, to the ‘Ikura Tart’, featuring the unlikely combination of homemade burrata and ikura (salmon roe) in a crispy plantain tart. The mains welcome a triad of meats, including the Aged Duck Breast Glazed in brem, Grilled Shorts Ribs in andaliman pepper jus and beetroot-glazed Smoked Pork Belly. Inspiration from classic Jakarta bites make subtle appearances, such as in the fun dessert dish ‘Es Campur Without the Ice’. Little odes to the city the founders call home. The a la carte menu features everything on the tasting menu, plus additional creations to explore.

Food is served from the open kitchen, found at the heart of ESA Restaurant’s ground-floor space. Contemporary and stylish, the atmosphere is likened more to a modern living, cosy and casual, accentuated by the warm lighting. It serves to appeal to a less formal generation, who wish to dine on good food without pretence. To keep diners returning the kitchen has a seasonal menu, turning over every eight months, when brand new flavours are served. A light beverage menu features a handful of imported wines and selected cocktails, plus ESA’s own ‘fruit wine’, bespoke fermented juices prepared to pair with the food.

Open from Monday to Saturday. 5.30pm to 10pm.
