Indonesian tourism scored yet another big win with the crowning of the Nihiwatu Resort as the number one hotel in the “World’s Best Hotel” award by the prestigious US travel magazine, Travel+Leisure.
The luxury and exclusive resort located in West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, scored the highest among its readers at 98.35, beating other prestigious world hotels such as The Spectator in South Carolina (97.78) and Huka Lodge in New Zealand (97.65). The resort, with its signature tree house villas perched atop the cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, was chosen for its strong eco-friendly concept and local culture preservation, including on its design as well as its employment of 90 per cent of local people.
In a press conference that was held on 18 July, the Minister of Tourism of Republic Indonesia, Arief Yahya, said the resort serves as a good example in developing sustainable tourism. He also stated that it was a good opportunity to promote Sumba as one of the best hidden destinations in Indonesia. The Nihiwatu Resort has been proactively contributing to the region, including providing donations via the Sumba Foundation, which was created by the founder of Nihiwatu, Claude Graves, and Sean Downs, and getting the resort’s guests to become a part of their CSR programmes.
