NOW! JAKARTA | Showcasing the Best of German Cinema

Already in its fifth edition this year, the German Cinema film festival returns to the Indonesian silver screen from October 14 to 23.

Presenting the best of Germany's current film scene, this year's festival programme features 15 internationally acclaimed and ambitious film productions.

German Cinema will open on October 14 with "Gruesse aus Fukushima" (Greetings from Fukushima) by award-winning director Dories Doerrie. The film centers on the story of Marie, a young German woman who travels to Japan in order to escape from her life. While touring the Fukushima region in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake, she meets an elderly Japanese woman and quickly forms a bond with her. Shot entirely in black and white, the film tells a moving story of friendship and ghosts of the past.

Another highly anticipated film of this year's line up is Sebastian Schipper's "Victoria", which the Guardian described as "an authentic piece of cinematic magic". Shot in a single continuous take, "Victoria" takes its viewers on a thrilling roller coaster ride through Berlin at night.

Other highlights include the drama "The Culpable" by Gerd Schneider, "Wild" by Nicolette Krebitz, "Freistatt" by Marc Brummund and "Coconut Hero" by Florian Cossen.

With this colourful cross-section of the German cinema landscape, the festival aims to inspire Indonesian audiences and show the ever-changing contemporary movie scene of Germany, which constantly offers fresh views and new perspectives on a wide range of topics by delivering powerful stories and raw emotions.

German Cinema will be held simultaneously in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Makassar. All films are accessible to a wide audience through English subtitles.
