Street Side | NOW! JAKARTA

Street Side

The maddening traffic, overcrowded malls, endless concrete, and perpetual smoggy sky of Indonesia’s capital city make Jakarta a daunting prospect for newcomers. Everywhere you look there are bizarre juxtapositions; crumbling shanty towns are backed by ultra modern skyscrapers, street children beg at car windows for small change while moneyed businessmen park up their super cars outside glitzy city centre hotels.

Street Side

It’s true that Jakarta is a city of contrasts, a mixed pot; history blends with modernity in a city which is changing fast. But what really makes Jakarta interesting is its inhabitants who come from various different backgrounds, religions and cultures and who, despite the overwhelming challenges that the city faces, are profoundly optimistic about the future.
