The RefillMyBottle Project Hopes to Reduce Plastic Waste in BaliCommitment
RefillMyBottle, a Bali-based environmental project aims to reduce plastic waste by optimising bottle use for daily needs. The community-focused project launched recently and with a crowdfunding campaign, raised USD 6,000 to build an application that helps users find refill stations around Bali.
The app will measure the number of plastic water bottles saved from cluttering landfills and the ocean thanks to the actions of the user. Since its founding over a year ago, the project has created a “refiller map” where people can fill up their bottle with clean water either for free or for a minimum fee.
Plastic pollution has become a global concern and it is affecting our environment, health as well as well-being. Indonesia is the second largest contributor of plastic waste in the world. RefillMyBottle’s mission to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles used unnecessarily throughout the world by offering a simple alternative to buying bottled water.
Over five million travelers visit Bali every year. It is estimated that each tourist consumes around 4 plastic bottles a day. This means there are over 6 million single-use plastic bottles used and discarded every month in Bali alone. With the lack of effective waste management systems, this means water bottles are ending up in landfills, the ocean, or create toxic fumes when burned.
The plastic problem affects people around the world. The project expects to spread this simple solution on a global scale, which, they hope, will enable more people to lead a conscious lifestyle and also empower local communities to take the lead on reducing plastic waste.
Since its initial conception, RefillBali evolved into RefillMyBottle and has already opened more than 350 Refill Stations throughout Indonesia. By participating in the crowdfunding campaign, people also participate in the sustainability movement which starts with a better application to make refilling accessible—and easy.
