The Indonesia Hockey Federation (FHI), in cooperation with the Indonesia Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) in Surabaya collaborated with the British Chamber (BritCham) of Commerce, to hold a coaching clinic for 100 students from four schools in Surabaya and Sidoarjo.
Held at the Hockey Field Dharmawangsa, Surabaya on 25 February, students received new gear to help them begin practice as instructors explained the basics of the game.
Executive director of BritCham, Chris Wren, said the main goal of the event was to seek prospective athletes for hockey. Part of the aim of an event like this is also to introduce this sport at an early age.
Head of the Indonesia hockey federation, Dony Gunawan added that the other goal of the event is to develop hockey players of international standard. “One of the goals of this event is to trigger the younger generation to play hockey. We also hope these children keep practicing with us, so in the future they can achieve something bigger,” Dony said.
This event was warmly received by students and also by the Executive Director of KADIN Surabaya, Dr. Ir Jamhadi. He said the sport was a good way to develop Surabaya as a city of athletes and to bring tourists to Surabaya and East Java. “Besides that, on 21 and 22 March the Liverpool football team will come to Surabaya. KADIN and SCCF [Surabaya Creative City Forum] will support Surabaya as a world class city,” Jamhadi said.
The event ended with representatives from each party release balloons to mark their cooperation. Many thanks to Dr. Ir Jamhadi, Dony Gunawan and Welly Gunawan from FINNA for giving some of their times to come and support the events.
