The Tugu Group never does things by halves and Ji at Bale Sutra 1706, the quirky new Japanese eatery at Hotel Tugu Bali, is no exception.

With Ji –  as always –  there is a focus on culture and history, and the restaurant takes its name (meaning “temple” in both Chinese and Japanese) from a 310-year-old Kang XI period temple which Tugu Hotels’ founder, Pak Anhar, rescued from a ruin in Java.

Your mythical dining experience begins as soon as you enter through one of three unique doorways; the “Gate of Love,” the “Gate of Heaven,” or the “Gate of Hell”.

The most richly decorated of the four dining areas is the hip yet historic “Red Room”.  It is within this exotic, antique-filled space that you will find the majestic centuries-old temple. The front bar features more of Tugu’s trademark eclectic design –  head here to watch the barmen whip up a range of Asian-inspired cocktails, as well as fine wines and a selection of sakes to quench your thirst.

Wander upstairs to enjoy a casual, al fresco dining and lounge area with a gorgeous sea view, perfect for sunset drinks or watching Canggu’s trendiest stroll past.

Food-wise, pickings are rich. Feast on Ji’s hand-crafted maki rolls such as Dragon of Ji (prawn tempura, avocado, flying fish roe, spicy mayo) or Tugu California Roll (flying fish roe caviar, truffle, cucumber, avocado, egg and prawn).

For light eaters, Tsukiji salad – Japanese seeweed, crab and fennel, carrot, and ginger dressing or their Smokey Salmon Zaru Soba with home-smoked salmon belly and citrus broth are good options.

Their hearty servings include Ji’s Pork Belly with vegetables and orange sauce that is also a popular order.  And with a Yuzu, Mint and Basil sorbet for dessert, you will have satisfied all of your cravings for the delicate flavours of Asia. Also, don’t forget to try Ji’s signature cocktails like Coco Sexo – Sagatiba Cachaca, Aromatic Coconut, Vannilla, Passion Fruit, and Gin and tea Dragon Tea-Infused Tranqueray.

Ji also has a wine-to-go and delivery service, available to provide the people living in surrounding villas in Bali with the most affordable fine wines and sakes on the island via GoJek or GoFood.
