In honour of the distinguished Italian architect and designer Vico Magistretti, whose work represents one of the most significant contributions to the success of Italian design in the world, the Embassy of Italy and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura (IIC) Jakarta are organizing an exhibition entitled “Vico Magistretti. A Traveling Archive”. The exhibition runs from 9 September to 7 October at the IIC and continues at the grandkemang hotel Jakarta from 7 October to 11 November, where it will be part of the Indonesian Contemporary Art and Design (ICAD) show.
“For us, this exhibition is very special, considering that Magistretti is one of the greatest Italian designers. Curated by Indonesian prominent architect, designer and art collector Cosmas Gozali, the exhibition is a great example of how an Indonesian architect interprets the main idea of a legendary Italian architect and designer,” says Michela Magri, Director of the IIC Jakarta. Visitors are invite to walk into a duplicate of Magistretti’s studio in Milan. His studio, overlooking one of Milan’s plazas, is the space in which the artist worked during his entire career. The walls are covered by pinboards full of samples of his favourite paper materials, sketches drawn on newspaper pages and family photographs. “Vico Magistretti. A Traveling Archive” provides an in-depth look at Magistretti’s award-winning works and a selection of his most iconic pieces, such as the Dalu, Eclisse and Atollo table lamps, Nuvoia Rossa bookcase and cinqueterre kitchen. The exhibition also showcases a series of videos that include a 40-minute interview in which Magistretti explains the theory behind his design, as well as discussions with famous Italian architects and designers Stefano Boeri and Patricia Urquiola, who share their opinion on Magistretti.
“This installation is divided into two sections: a replicate of his studio in abstract interpretation and the other side of the studio is a space dedicated to display his product designs that are arranged chronically. I hope this art installation will give a new point of view and deeper understanding of the Great Master, Vico Magistretti, to Indonesian public,” says Cosmas Gozali.
