October Update
New restaurants in Jakarta that opened in October 2024
La Balena
Pondok Indah in Jakarta Selatan never runs out of exquisite restaurants to visit. This month, a new Italian restaurant called La Balena is opening its doors to those craving the comfort of home while basking in lush natural surroundings, all without ever having to leave the city. From the moment you step inside, you are greeted by a cosy atmosphere adorned with biophilic interior design and an edible garden corner, blending seamlessly into contemporary convenience.
However, no matter how impressive a restaurant’s decor may be, it’s the food that truly matters. Thankfully, La Balena’s culinary team, led by the seasoned Chef Mike Lamtara, delivers the expectations. With a focus on elevated home-cooked meals, every detail of each dish is crafted to embody the authenticity and warmth of Italian cuisine. This begins with fresh ingredients, handmade dough, and fresh pasta—everything is made from scratch.
The first recommended dish to try is their Spaghetti alla Vongole, a classic seafood pasta brimming with the fresh, briny flavours of clams and razor clams. If you prefer a timeless favourite, try their Margherita Pizza, featuring a simple yet flavorful combination of rich, tangy tomato sauce, topped with creamy, melted mozzarella and aromatic fresh basil. But before you delve into these heartier treats, start with their Insalata Burrata e Pomodoro. This fresh and vibrant salad celebrates the beauty of simplicity with creamy, delicate burrata paired with juicy, sun-ripened tomatoes and fragrant basil. A drizzle of balsamic vinegar ties all the flavours together in every crisp bite.
Founded by Sherrine Budiman, the vision behind La Balena is to create a haven where guests feel at ease, as though they’ve stepped into their own family’s dining room. A special designated area for kids’ activities is also in the works, fulfilling Sherrine’s aim to make La Balena a family-friendly dining destination.

His use of traditional techniques like grilling and braising, combined with bold international spices, makes every dish that comes from his kitchen full of flavours.

Briq Bistro
Offering a menu of classic French cuisine, BRIQ Bistro invites diners to settle into an intimate venue tucked away in Kebayoran Baru. The restaurant is the latest opening from a young group of hospitality professionals breaking their way into Jakarta’s food and beverage scene having found success in their first venture, BEBOP Bar + Kitchen.
From the street front, BRIQ Bistro’s eye-catching red door beckons curiosity, welcoming guests into a chic and cosy dining space that certainly channels the charm of a little Parisian bistro. At the back of the venue, a tidy open kitchen fills the restaurant with the bustle of busying French café, and its maroon colour-scheme and white tablecloths complete a ‘snug’ aesthetic that makes it great for dinner dates and tête-à-têtes.
The bistro inspiration does not stop with atmosphere, as BRIQ’s menu pays homage to French bistro classics, serving Provençal flavours and rustic favourites of the region. Entrées include Quiche Florentine, Pâte de Foie de Volaille, and of course a great serving of Escargots de Bourgogne. Other starting selections come the separate Soup, Salad and Pasta menus, offering Bisque de Homard (creamy lobster bisque cooked in Cognac) to the classic Salade Niçoise.
Despite what its chic atmosphere and French food may suggest, BRIQ’s pricing is very approachable. There’s very little pretension here as they aim to be an easy-choice lunch and dinner venue, welcoming regulars with a warm ambience and hearty, satisfying dishes, all for a great price.

HATS
South Jakarta is a constantly evolving dining hub, one needs to stand out to thrive. HATS, located in the chic Iskandarsyah Street, offers a unique fusion of craft cocktails and refreshing sorbets all in one spot. As the brandchild of the award-winning pastry chef turned mixologist Demitria Dana Paramita, HATS is a seamless blend of two distinct worlds– with Demitria’s dual expertise allowing her to bridge the gap between sweet and bold flavours in a way that feels effortless. The venue reflects this contrast: a sorbet shop upfront leads to a hidden cocktail bar behind it, offering a shift from light to bold in just a few steps.
The front parlour serves a selection of non-alcoholic sorbets. Familiar flavours like Negroni, Piña Colada, and White Russian are transformed into playful, alcohol-free treats, these are choices for those who want to cool off or indulge in some refreshing delights.
But if you’re seeking something more intense, the real magic happens behind the sorbet shop in HATS’ hidden cocktail bar. Demitria’s “Shades of Red” menu offers a clever way to explore the cocktail spectrum. As the name suggests, each drink intensifies in flavour and colour the deeper you go into the menu, but if you’re unsure to choose, the Red Carpet Collection is your safe bet. These three signature cocktails have each earned Demitria recognition in competitions throughout her career.
First up is Nira, inspired by the Sanskrit word for ‘water’ and ‘liquor,’ and featuring a blend of Roku Gin, siwalan vinegar, and reduced palm sap. Smokey and refreshing, it highlights how a single ingredient can bring out complex flavours. Assam Laksa, a cocktail that pays homage to Penang’s iconic laksa. This drink is a sweet, sour, and spicy mix of Bobby’s Gin, pineapple puree, and kecombrang (torch ginger flower). The last of the trio is Ramona Legacy, a heartfelt tribute to Demitria’s mother and built around the flavour of strawberries. With Bacardi Carta Blanca and Palo Cortado, it’s a fruity, herbal, and sour cocktail.
HATS offers an inviting contrast between light, sorbet-driven treats and rich, expertly crafted cocktails. The bar opens on Sunday, Tuesday to Thursday at 5 PM until 1 AM; While on Friday & Saturday it opens from 5 PM until 2 AM. It is closed on Mondays. The Sorbet Parlor, however, opens from Monday to Sunday, from 12 PM until 12 AM.

August Update
New restaurants in Jakarta that opened in August 2024
Emilia Bar Italiano
It seems that Menteng just will not stop rolling out the best hangout spots. Just last week, a new addition was unveiled in this chic neighbourhood called Emilia Bar Italiano. Though the name speaks of Mediterranean charm, from the entrance you will be met in a setting that takes you to a classic, almost rustic American bar interior. With rich half wooden-panelled walls and velvet booths, this makes a warm place to come to after long hours of work meetings in cold, stale skyscraper buildings. But if you want to go for something more open, there is also a spacious dining room inside a glasshouse that offers a touch of al fresco dining without leaving the comforts of its cool and serene ambiance.
For its menu, Emilia takes Italian staples and elevates them with premium ingredients and crafty ideas. The menu is nothing short of mouthwatering. Start your meal with Mussels Mariniere—plump black mussels bathed in white wine, served with fresh focaccia for dipping. For those in the mood for something a bit more adventurous, try the Lumache featuring escargot baked with mushrooms, spinach, green butter, and topped with herb crumbs for a satisfying crunch.
Emilia’s handcrafted pastas like Lobster Gratiné Linguine boasts delicate linguine topped with rich, golden lobster gratin and a splash of white wine, while the Fettuccine Spinach Salmone delivers creamy goodness with its combination of salmon, mushroom, and boscaiola cream sauce.
No Italian-inspired bar would be complete without a curated selection of wines and cocktails. Emilia’s drinks menu offers everything from classic favourites to bold, inventive concoctions. Their signature Emilia Aged Negroni blends Dry Gin, Sloe Gin, Campari, and Sweet Vermouth into a smooth, rich cocktail that lingers long after the last sip. For something a little more playful, the Coconut Pandan Martini adds an Asian-inspired twist, with vodka fat washed in coconut oil and pandan-infused vermouth for an exotic yet familiar flavour. The Paddle Pop cocktail is a fun and creative addition that will take you back to your childhood with a delightful mix of lemongrass tequila, passion fruit, orange, and bubble gum.

ACTA Brasserie Gading Serpong
Having welcomed a steady stream of happy diners to their popular venue in Senayan, Acta Brasserie opened a second branch in Gading Serpong, April 2024. This milestone move brings the restaurant to a new community, showcasing their menu to new discerning customers in Tangerang.
The original Acta Brasserie opened its doors four years ago, brought to life by Jakarta’s own BIKO Group, known for other city favourites like Beer Garden, Fujin Izakaya and the neighbouring Black Pond Tavern. Nestled along the Senayan golf course fairway, the restaurant’s verdant views and cosy chalet living room appeal quickly became a hit with the Jakarta crowd.
Looking to repeat their success, and indeed find somewhere that emulates the same atmosphere, the group looked further afield, landing in a vibrant neighbourhood of Gading Serpong. Calling upon the renowned Bitte Design Studio, the new Acta Brasserie takes a life of its own, with plush diner-style booths, wood-panel bar and hanging stained-glass ceiling lamps that give it a distinct vintage feel.
Of course, Acta Brasserie brings its menu to its second home, featuring the popular creations of Chef Rui Yamagishi. The international selection features elevated comfort favourites, like the popular Truffle Mushroom Fettuccine, but also presents exclusive dishes for this branch, crafted to best suit the diners of the area. Another important ‘import’ is of course the dessert’s of now renowned Pastry Chef, Nabila Yoestino, whose Valrhona Pandan Lava Cake to Deconstructed Biscoff Cheesecake fly off the menu in Senayan. Chef Nabila unveils a new dessert for the new venue, the Mille Crepe, set to be signature of the establishment.
Importantly, Acta Brasserie Gading Serpong continues the brand’s focus as a wine-forward destination, featuring an extensive collection of bottles for patrons to browse and savour along with their meal.

ESA Restaurant
Adding to Jakarta’s evening destinations, ESA Restaurant presents a fresh take on a refined dining experience. This stylish venue is the brainchild of three young and passionate culinary professionals who have set out to break the food and beverage boundaries. Experimental and innovative, the menu takes diners on a journey of unexpected flavours.
ESA, meaning ‘one’ in Sanskrit, is a statement from the founders, together embarking on their first (i.e. number one) foray as independent restaurateurs. The collective experience of Chef Aditya Muskita, Jessica Eveline and Kevindra Soemantri rings in a new ‘genre’ of dining, with their ultimate goal being to define the ‘New Jakarta Cuisine’. ESA Restaurant thus aims to represent the Jakarta of today, the modern cosmopolitan, with its melting pot of cultures. Chef Aditya, who has cooked in renowned kitchens like Mozaic and Room 4 Dessert in Ubud to Relae in Copenhagen, Denmark, thus showcases a reimagining of Jakarta’s favourite flavours through both a tasting and a la carte menu.
The 14-course tasting menu is served to the table as a sharing experience, an informal degustation style where an eclectic collection of dishes are served in unison through the amuse bouche, appetiser, mains, dessert and petit fours courses. Diners will likely muse over the creativity of the dishes, from the delicate ‘Foie Gras Parfait’ served with Hoisin-glazed fried dough, to the ‘Ikura Tart’, featuring the unlikely combination of homemade burrata and ikura (salmon roe) in a crispy plantain tart. The mains welcome a triad of meats, including the Aged Duck Breast Glazed in brem, Grilled Shorts Ribs in andaliman pepper jus and beetroot-glazed Smoked Pork Belly. Inspiration from classic Jakarta bites make subtle appearances, such as in the fun dessert dish ‘Es Campur Without the Ice’. Little odes to the city the founders call home. The a la carte menu features everything on the tasting menu, plus additional creations to explore.
Food is served from the open kitchen, found at the heart of ESA Restaurant’s ground-floor space. Contemporary and stylish, the atmosphere is likened more to a modern living, cosy and casual, accentuated by the warm lighting. It serves to appeal to a less formal generation, who wish to dine on good food without pretence. To keep diners returning the kitchen has a seasonal menu, turning over every eight months, when brand new flavours are served. A light beverage menu features a handful of imported wines and selected cocktails, plus ESA’s own ‘fruit wine’, bespoke fermented juices prepared to pair with the food.
Open from Monday to Saturday. 5.30pm to 10pm.
