Samsonite Recycle Park

Samsonite Indonesia revives Hang Tuah Park in Kebayoran Baru with artistic installations made of recycled used luggage materials. On 8 February 2024, visitors were officially welcomed to enjoy Samsonite Recycle Park and enjoy the shade as well as facilities that benefit the community.

The park’s installations were created in collaboration with WERGUD, a creative agency that focuses on recycled products; as well Plus Jakarta, the official city brand under the Jakarta provincial government. Samsonite Indonesia received used luggage from their customers through their Luggage Trade-In programme, a flagship annual campaign as part of the company’s CSR commitment to support sustainable environmental preservation. This was processed and then designed into an array of different products and installations, from tables to floor mats and even children’s play areas.

The majority of the luggage material was processed into high-density polyethylene (HDPE), coming out as sheets in a speckle of colours, dominated mainly by read. Despite being completely refurbished, the recycled material still holds some recognisable characteristics of the Samsonite luggage, such as the sound it makes when tapped.

“We believe that people deserve to have comfortable open spaces. Samsonite Recycle Park is Samsonite’s effort to contribute to the sustainable environmental preservation, as well as to drive consumer awareness in choosing products that support a circular economy and an eco-friendly lifestyle.” stated Nadya Pertiwi, Country Head of PT Samsonite Indonesia.

A total of 2,615 used luggages were collected by Samsonite and WERGUD throughout 2023, an increase of 74% than previous year. Of the thousands of used luggges, 300 were converted into HDPE material and installed in Hang Tuah Park.

Through this programme, customers have participated and received a special offer of 40% off select Samsonite collections, such as CUBE, ENOW, UPSCAPE, EVOA and LITE-FRAME, by exchanging their old, unused luggage.

Samsonite Recycle Park symbolises sustainability, innovation and community collaboration, further emphasising Samsonite’s dedication to responsible environmental practices. Visitors to Taman Hang Tuah are invited to explore Samsonite Recycle Park and enjoy the beauty and potential of public facilities produced from recycled materials and get a better understanding to support environmental awareness and create a path towards a greener future.
