British School Jakarta (BSJ) recently captivated audiences with their vibrant production of We Will Rock You (WWRY), the hit musical based on Queen’s iconic songs, written by Ben Elton. Performed at the BSJ World Theatre in Bintaro Jaya, the show ran on November 25, 26, and 28, showcasing the remarkable talents of BSJ’s students through electrifying music, dance, and multimedia effects.

Set in a dystopian future where individuality and live music are outlawed by the oppressive Global Soft Corporation, the story follows two rebels, Galileo (Zane) and Scaramouche (Anissa), as they lead the charge to revive the spirit of rock and roll. The production featured 23 of Queen’s legendary songs, including We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, which had audiences clapping, stomping, and singing along, creating an electric and unifying atmosphere.

The musical was a collaborative effort involving over 40 students aged 13 to 18, with guidance from esteemed professionals Noel Sullivan, a former pop star, and James Bennett, a celebrated choreographer known for Strictly Come Dancing and Rocketman. Their mentorship enriched the students’ skills in acting, singing, and dancing, while fostering confidence and resilience.

Director Jessica Yadav described the production as a team effort, saying, “Everything you see is a culmination of our ideas coming to life.” Music Director Stephen Tomlinson highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing artistic talent through opportunities like musicals, which allow students to put theory into practice.

The standout performances, coupled with dazzling special effects like a 3D fire engulfing the story’s antagonists, enthralled audiences of all ages. Anissa, one of the lead performers, likened the experience to the perseverance required during a challenging test, while Zane shared his aspirations to pursue acting in the future.

BSJ’s production of We Will Rock You was more than just a showcase of talent—it was a celebration of individuality, resilience, and the unifying power of music. It left a lasting impression on performers and spectators alike, proving that the spirit of rock and roll is alive and well in the hands of the next generation.
