Indonesian Contemporary Art and Design (ICAD) returns this year at Grandkemang, marking its 10 years journey in supporting homegrown art through interdisciplinary collaboration. Focusing on the generation of artists, ICAD 2019 is an essential exploration to discover a creative map from the artist’s masterpieces that profoundly influence the progress of Indonesian contemporary world.

Factor ‘X’ is an approach to render the artist’s creative mind through mind-mapping. Curated by Hafiz Rancajale, ICAD provides a depth of information about fundamental thought that influence artists to create masterpieces. A tribute to ten renowned figures in Indonesian creative worlds—ranging from architect, painter, poet, interior and fashion designer—are presented in a comprehensive display that allows one to discover the artistic journey of maestros. The special presentation highlights the works from Adi Purnomo, Agus Suwage, Nirwan Dewanto, Dolorosa Sinaga, Hadiprana, FX Harsono, Hardiman Radjab, Ridaldy A Yunardi, Syahrizal Pahlevi and Tisna Sanjaya to see the progress of the industry in the last two decades.

Racajale said that the exhibit presents a constructive footprint that comes from the thoughts of their creators and attaches to the social world surrounding the works. “Sometimes we don’t know how the artist works because we only see the result. It’s an artistic exposition of creative thinking, the factors that construct and influence these masters to create all their signature works.

Here, the public can see that,” said Rancajale, a curator who is also the founder of Forum Lenteng. Along with his curatorial team, Rancajale continues the journey of contemporary art and design by presenting emerging artists and designers whose works are considered potential to today’s culture. NextGen is a dedicated zone featuring feature the works of 15 young creative minds such as Aliansyah Chaniago, Mulyana and the winner of UOB Painting of the year 2018, Suvi Wahyudiyanto. This year, the first open submission selected eight works to be shown on the exhibit as an attempt to extend the map of Indonesian contemporary art and design.

This year, ICAD also organises three conventions around art, design and film followed by the first ICAD Awards as an appreciation night to homegrown creative players.

“Many artists are focused on the final result and it probably requires them to unveil something which had been hidden in archival documents, visual documentation, notes, and thoughts. If we examine the Western art, they have all that useful innovations for development and I think we have to start it from here to develop ours, Racajale said to NOW! Jakarta.
