Get Your Jazz On

Music | 9 June 2016

The Ubud Village Jazz Festival returns for the 4th time this August, to be held once again at ARMA Museum and Resort from 12 – 13 August.

Look out for acclaimed Indonesian jazz musicians alongside world class international acts like LOUIS! Project from Holland, an inventive and surprising musical ensemble based on the legend of Louis Armstrong. The show is promised to bring you swing, spirituals, improvisation, blues and vocals that will make you think you are in New Orleans. Another interesting highlight is set to be the Ian Scionti Trio, a group which explores the limit between jazz and flamenco. On the local front, look forward to performances from Mia Samira, Salamander Big Band (Bandung), and Balinese based jazz groups, Bali Gypsy Fire and Joyfe Jazz Quintet.

If two days of great music wasn’t enough, there will also be some exciting food and wine promotions to complement the music. Browse no less than 26 food outlets and enjoy a free flow of Bali’s Plaga wine for a full hour while taking in the music and the ambience. Performances will span over three stages, each with a different theme - the Padi stage, inspired by the Balinese tradition of rice farming, the Giri stage, in honour of the great Mount Agung, and the Subak stage, the famous Balinese irrigation system for rice fields.

For the third year, Ubud Village Jazz Festival 2016 is helping to promote Jazz education in Indonesia. The Bali Jazz Summer School will be held over three days prior to the festival and will be divided into classes featuring, drums, piano, double bass, vocal, and brass and reed instruments. Festival co-founder, Yuri Mahatma explains “This is a great opportunity for young Indonesians to gain valuable knowledge and improve their skills through classes in theory and daily jam sessions”.
