To commemorate Jakarta’s 496th Anniversary on 22 June 2023, The Sultan Hotel & Residence Jakarta brings the ultimate Betawi experience through ‘Betawi Food Galore’ from 22-29 June 2023. This specially curated experience will be hosted at the hotel’s acclaimed Lagoon Cafe, where guests can savour the authentic taste of Betawi cuisine.

Betawi Food Galore invites guests to hand-pick different specialty dishes on this limited-time menu, each dish is available a la carte.

One highlight dish is Rujak Juhi, a popular refreshing appetiser amongst the locals in the capital. The star of this dish is the juhi or baked dried cuttlefish, combined with yellow noodles, cucumber slices, lettuce or cabbage, and potatoes served with peanut sauce, with an additional touch of calamari. Rujak Juhi is available for IDR 89,000++ per portion.

No Jakarta anniversary celebration is complete without a bowl of Soto Buntut Betawi, undoubtedly one of the most famous dishes in Betawi culture. This hearty beef soup is filled with generous chunks of meat and offal, slowly simmered in a savoury coconut broth enriched with various spices. The star of this meal is of course the big chunk of oxtail that gives the broth its richness. This dish is available for IDR 220,000++ per portion.

Enjoy a filling meal with Nasi Ulam Betawi, steamed rice mixed with coconut and peanut granules with kuah semur (sweet soy sauce soup)  topped with crackers and a variety of dishes of choice, such as omelette and dendeng (beef jerky). A plate of this meal is available for IDR 140,000++ per portion.

The last two dishes come with unique twists creatively invented by The Sultan Hotel and Residence Jakarta’s culinary team. Try their fusion Pizza Ondel-Ondel, with colourful toppings that resemble Betawi’s iconic puppet, Ondel-Ondel. The toppings include shrimp, fish ball, sweet-sour sauce, and pineapple slices, a refreshing seafood take on the classic Italian dish. Guests can purchase a pan of Pizza Ondel-Ondel for IDR 135,000++

Rengginang Cake

This ‘Betawi Food Galore’ won’t be complete without a tantalising one-of-a-kind dessert, the Rengginang Cake. Rengginang is a type of Indonesian rice cracker, made from cooked glutinous sticky rice and seasoned with spices. For this dessert, the rengginang is mixed with white chocolate and almond flour, turning it into an all-new desert that you’ll have to try for yourself. For a slice, The Rengginang Cake costs around IDR 88,000++ and IDR 308,000++ for the whole cake.
