Why the theme ‘Generasi Inovasi’ (Innovation Generation)? Well, the food industry is being brought into a whole new paradigm, with youthful interest exploding through the likes of social media, smartphone apps, ecommerce and a general need to be fresh and different in such a competitive field. So, this year the festival will focus on this “new world”, and on the people who are bringing these changes to Indonesia’s diversifying culinary landscape.

Presenting ideas from this youthful generation will be guest speakers David Christian, Co-founder of Evoware, producing food packaging from biodegradable, chemical-free farmed seaweed; Tissa Aunilla of Pipiltin Cocoa; Thor Yumna of TaniHub, an agricultural app empowering farmers; Helianti Hilman, Founder of JAVARA Indonesia, and Steven Kim, Founder of Qraved, Indonesia’s most popular food app. So, from technology to sustainability to communication, these speakers will share their insights into the food landscape of the future.

Of course, food itself remains the focus! The Ubud Food Festival 2018 will be welcoming a range of inspiring chefs from Asia and beyond, including Indonesian-born Rydo Anton, Head Chef of Gaggan in Bangkok, the first restaurant to maintain the top spot on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list three years in a row. Rydo will be joined by international chefs such as Korean Chef Sun Kim from Meta, Singapore; Chef Rishi Naleendra, the first Sri Lankan chef to receive a Michelin star for his Singapore restaurant Cheek by Jowl; and Australian Chef Ryan Squires, whose Esquire in Queensland holds three Chef Hats. This is but a tiny taste of the almost 100 speakers converging in Ubud this year!

Even with these impressive international chefs descending on Bali, Indonesian food is still the star, and a host of Indonesian food icons will be adding their own flavours to the festival. From the Queen of Indonesian cuisine, Ibu Sisca Soewitomo (this year returning with her daughter, Novia Soewitomo) to famed MasterChef Indonesia Judge, Rinrin Marinka; captains of the Indonesian capital, Hans Christian, Chef de Cuisine of View Restaurant by Fairmont Jakarta, Chef Andrian Ishak, whose Namaaz Dining has been described as Indonesia’s first molecular gastronomy restaurant, and Chef Ragil Imam Wibowo of NUSA Indonesian Gastronomy. Last but not least, local Bali legends, such as Chris Salans (Mozaic), Mandif Warokka (Blanco par Mandif), Kevin Cherkas (Cuca) and of course the crew of Locavore.

This smorgasbord of food experts and entrepreneurs will be taking over a range of events that take place at the Ubud Food Festival, from insightful talks, live cooking demos, in-depth masterclasses, decadent special events, film screenings, markets, music and more.
