Grand Hyatt Jakarta has chosen a unique approach to celebrate Jakarta’s 494th anniversary. Instead of celebratory fanfares, the five-star hotel is introducing a new style of afternoon tea at Fountain Lounge for the special occasion. The inspiration first came from handmade batiks, the country’s fine couture legacy.
Executive Chef Adam Szczechura wanted to imbue batik artistry on special dishes prepared for an Indonesian-flavoured afternoon tea. "Batik always has intricate patterns and shapes that portray emotions," said the Polish-born chef. "I want to replicate that meticulous craftsmanship to elevate an afternoon tea experience."
Such combination of ideas gave birth to a Batik-Inspired Afternoon Tea, where favourite local delicacies shine alongside tailored tea concoctions. Kembang Goyang, crispy pastry from Betawi cuisine, dances in vivid colours with orange slices and vanilla custard. Another sweet and-savoury pair is Pisang Goreng topped with grated cheddar cheese. Martabak Bebek in twin tubes and Rendang Bulan in crunchy balls make a visually captivating duet.
Meanwhile, Gado-Gado tarts take after the round shapes typically found in Balinese batik. Equally enticing is Satay Lapis, a fabulous rendition of a traditional snack. To complement the wonderful afternoon tea set is a stylish Besek, food basket, comprising other delectable market snacks.
Guests ordering the Batik-Inspired Afternoon Tea every Friday and Saturday are in for a treat. A batik lady carrying a batik umbrella with artisan chocolate praline wraps hanging around the edges will pass by and offer the sweet treats. There is also a special display by Iwan Tirta Private Collection, highlighting the beauty and versatility of batik.
The Batik-Inspired Afternoon Tea is served daily from 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM at Fountain Lounge starting 21 June 2021. The set price for two persons, including tea or coffee, is at
IDR 360,000++. There are also special choices of tea concoctions by Tea et al and alcoholic
beverage pairing on offer.
