On 21 April every year the people of Indonesia commemorate one of the most prominent occasions with regards to women empowerment and celebrate the birth anniversary of the most cherished female figures Raden Ajeng Kartini, a pioneer in women empowerment and a figure of feminism back in the era of the Dutch colonialisation. To celebrate the 140th Kartini Day, the American Cultural Institute in Indonesia @amercia is holding a discussion on Young Women in Political Power on 4 May at Pacific Place Mall, Level 3. This occasion is meant to create social awareness on important issues related to feminism, humanities and the women’s challenges in Indonesia. Notable speakers in the event include Tsamara Amany Alatas (Legislative Candidate and Chairwoman of Central Board of Partai Solidaritas Indonesia), Maruchah (Commissioner of National Commission on Violence Against Women) and Nadira Irdiana (Presidium Jaringan AKSI Remaja Perempuan Indonesia). Presented by Adelina R Simatupang as the moderator, this discussion is expected to welcome not only young women who are inspired by Kartini’s spirits but also to the public who are following her footsteps and courage in the hopes for applying Kartini’s message in Indonesia’s present day.
