In collaboration with Yayasan Emmanuel, Fairmont Jakarta visited a scavenger community in Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta on 3 April as part of its corporate social responsibility programme.

During the visit, Fairmont Jakarta’s Executive Pastry Chef Sapto Wibowo and Executive Sous Chef Edi Pancamala taught the community how to make churros, a sweet snack consisting of a strip of fried dough dusted with sugar or chocolate sauce.

The chefs prepared an easy cooking demonstration in order for the community to be able to follow the cooking process. The snack was chosen because the ingredients for churros are simple and affordable, containing flour, eggs, frying oil and sugar. The cooking demo was expected to provide feasible ideas for the community and perhaps to sell the snacks for additional income.

Before the cooking demonstration, Yayasan Emmanuel distributed food that they collected from Jakarta hotels and restaurants under their “Food Rescue Program”, whereas Fairmont Jakarta shared sembako packages and donations for each family in the community.

“This visit is truly an eye-opening experience. We are happy to be given this chance to share a bit of our knowledge, goods and time to this community through this visit. We hope we can continue our efforts to support such communities by doing more initiatives to help others,” explained Carlos Monterde, GeneralManager of Fairmont Jakarta.
