Around 20,000 volunteers came together on 16 October to join the fourth annual Clean Up Jakarta Day. At 53 locations across the capital, the “Clean Up Heroes” were educated to separate recyclable from non-recyclable litter in an effort to implement the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle – into their daily lives. 80 tonnes of waste was collected and brought to the city’s waste banks for sorting and recycling.
Coincidentally with Clean Up Jakarta Day, Dinas Kebersihan DKI launched its new recycling collection initiative which sees 80 recycling trucks collecting recyclable waste from residences and office towers and delivering it to different waste banks in Jakarta in order to reduce the amount of garbage that lands at Bantar Gebang, the largest landfill in Indonesia. Many local celebrities, including actor and TV presenter Mike Lewis, who also acts as the event’s ambassador, supported Clean Up Jakarta Day. “It starts with you, and if everyone takes that challenge on, we will finally see a change; we will finally see a clean Jakarta,” he said. In addition to Jakarta, Clean Up Day was also held in other cities, such as Bandung and Tabalong, as well as on Bali and surrounding islands.
