Jakarta Aquarium conducted a marine educational programme for elementary and junior high school students at Tidung Island, Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands) located just off Jakarta as a part of celebrating National Fisherman’s Day on 6 April.
During the two day event, from 9 to 10 April, Jakarta Aquarium conducted a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme by visiting a number of schools including SD Negeri 01 Pulau Tidung, SD Negeri 01 Pulau Tidung, SD Negeri 03 Pulau Tidung, and SMP 241. In collaboration with the Department of Education in Pulau Seribu, staff from Jakarta Aquarium demonstrated its sustainability program, and encouraged children to keep their environment clean.
Through this “edutainment” event which involved fun games, students learned about waste management and strengthened their knowledge about the importance of sorting specific waste to help upcycle and recycle initiatives, and minimise natural destruction. The programme aims to create environmental awareness from an early age. The team also spoke to the local community—including a home stay owner, fishermen and local public figures—to identify environmental issues and share information to build an alliance to generate action on maritime protection.
As archipelagic nation, Indonesia is powered by its blue economy as a number of fishermen help provide food from the wealth of the country’s marine sources. Since 1960, Indonesia has been celebrating National Fisherman’s Day as part of efforts to recognise the millions of fishermen who are focused on helping provide food for the country.
In the near future, Jakarta Aquarium plans to run similar programmes periodically to highlight Indonesia’s marine biodiversity. With its campaign “LAUTKU BERSIH” (My Clean Ocean) Jakarta Aquarium invites communities, especially the youth, to be environmentally aware and to help create a better future.
