John Hardy Master Class 1

Tucked amidst the lush surroundings of Mambal, near Ubud, the John Hardy Workshop & Kapal Bamboo Boutique offers one of the most sought-after jewellery-making workshops in Bali, accompanied by their signature communal Long Table Lunch. For those interested in learning a new skill, John Hardy Workshop’s Master Class provides a great stepping stone into artisanal jewellery-making craftsmanship.

For nearly five decades, the John Hardy brand has been crafting some of the most exquisitely designed and unique handmade jewellery in Bali, crafted by a collective of masterful Balinese artisans through time-honoured techniques passed down through generations.

John Hardy arrived in Bali in the 1970s, discovering a group of artisans whose craft had been handed down for generations. Thus, the John Hardy brand was established in 1975 out of his passion for design, sustainability, and local craftsmanship. From its humble beginnings in Bali which has grown to become a globally recognised brand, John Hardy has become a shining beacon of sustainability and the preservation of Balinese culture, traditional land use and local artisanship.

At its flagship location in Mambal, guests can get a hands-on experience with the Master Artisans and learn their intricate craftsmanship, while customising their own piece of John Hardy jewellery. This intimate experience provides a unique look into John Hardy’s legacy jewellery-making techniques and multi-step process, which is as beautiful as the final product itself.

The Master Class Series: Immersion & Customisation

John Hardy Master Class 2

The John Hardy Workshop offers two Master Classes: the Immersion Master Class and the Customisation Master Class. During the Master Class, guests will delve into the techniques; a step-by-step jewellery-making process and get the opportunity to work alongside the artisans to customise their own unique jewellery.

In the first step of the process, designs are outlined on paper, which is then carved into wax to create the mould for the finished pieces. Then, guests will try their hand at weaving the signature Icon Chain, link by link, to experience a real feel of the chain-weaving technique, which has been a trademark of Balinese craftsmanship for generations.

Guests’ bespoke pieces can be cast and finished for those who opt to follow the process through and take home a timeless piece of John Hardy jewellery that they have personally customised themselves. However, those who simply want to enjoy the Master Class can take home their rendered design and wax carving as a keepsake.

The Immersion Master Class includes an artisan workshop tour, archive tour, design-your-own drawing, jewellery watercolour rendering, wax design carving, and Icon Chain weaving, while the Customisation Master Class includes the one-of-a-kind finished design that will be shipped to them within 2 months.
