Enjoying Elegant Vibes and Japanese Delights at Iseya Robatayaki

FOOD: THE MUSIC OF LOVE | 21 October 2017

Jakarta has no shortage of Japanese restaurants, but there are only a few that stand out from the plethora of sushi bars, teppanyaki joints and Izakaya-inspired eateries: Iseya Robatayaki is one of them.

Located at Sampoerna Strategic Square, Iseya radiates Japanese vibes before one even enters the restaurants, as diners are greeted by a huge aquarium, where stingrays and arowanas majestically float through the water.

Inside, diners have the option to choose between a semi-private dining area or three private rooms, all of which feature high ceilings, windows that are nine meters high, brocade drapes and an elegant interior, allowing for an intimate and exclusive dining experience.

Everything here is distinctly Japanese, from the ingredients - fresh vegetables, meats and seafood are regularly flown in from different parts of Japan, including the world-renowned Kobe beef - to the traditional kimonos the waiters wear.

In the end, however, it all comes down to the taste of the food, and Iseya also exceeds expectations in this regard: the restaurant’s menu offers a wide range of authentic Japanese dishes and set menus with several courses for lunch.

Simply put, the food is excellent, from Japanese favourites to more refined dishes. The taste is exquisite, while the food presentation is truly Japanese style, with a loving eye for details.

Among the many choices on the menu, there are some standouts: the Unagi Chawanmushi (egg custard with freshwater eel) was the perfect way to start the meal, while the Tempura (battered and deep fried seafood and vegetables) was deliciously crisp. The Teppanyaki consisted of grilled beef and salmon, so tender that it melted on the tongue, and as a “surprise dish”, the chef prepared a Japanese-style pizza.

In fact, the skilled chefs at Iseya prepare some of the dishes at the grill in the dining room, so diners can witness their refined cooking techniques firsthand. Depending on the season and the availability of certain ingredients, they often add new creations to the menu: Iseya’s regular customers love to stop by spontaneously just to see what’s in store for that particular week or month.

Iseya Robatayaki, serves lunch from Monday to Sunday between 11.30 AM and 2.30 PM and dinner from 5.30 PM to 10 PM.
