MVB Indonesia took its annual conference to new heights in a packed one-day session which covered much of Indonesia’s major economic sectors with expert speakers attacking the problems and proposing solutions. MVB Chairman Alistair Speirs and CEO Eamonn Sadler dispensed with formalities by both MC-ing and moderating the whole conference themselves and keeping the pace of the event up.

The keynote speech was delivered by the committed but charming Amanda Katili Niode from The Climate Reality Project, who reminded us of the real challenges that Indonesia faces.

This was followed by presentations on the major concern areas for all industries:

  • Energy from Steve Piro of Synergy Efficiency Solutions
  • Water from Didier Perez of PIPA
  • Air from Lastyo Lukito of The Nature Conservancy
  • Waste from Faiza Fauziah by Waste4Change

They outlined the challenges faced by all industries but offered practical and genuine solutions.

There then came the first of three panel sections on Sustainable Food & Beverages led by Helianti Hilman of Javara, Karyanto Wibowo of Danone-Aqua, Lucia Karina of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, and Reza Andreanto of TetraPak Indonesia, who thoroughly explored the best practices in their industries and surprised many delegates with their major progress. Helianti, however, took a whole different approach as the champion of poor farmers and innovator of forest products progress is moving towards waste management solutions.

As a wakeup call half way through the seminar, a second Keynote Speech was introduced with Martin Jacobson from start-up Supertext explaining his whole new communication technology and how it can increase sustainability without internet.

The afternoon sessions then continued with MVB Chairman Alistair Speirs leading off on Sustainable Tourism, followed by Susan Santos De Cardenas from the Society of Sustainable Tourism and Development following together with Sufintri Rahayu from Traveloka who explored their different angles on sustainable tourism.

The final session was on Sustainable Fashion and Textiles with presentations from Marina Chahboune of Closed Loop Fashion, Jessica Vilhelmson of H&M, JP Seveke from Hollit International and David Forsgate of Eralda. All totally immersed in their subjects, their expertise came through very strongly and illustrated clearly the major challenges faced by their important industry and explored possible solutions.

A total of over 140 people came to the event and marked a breakthrough for MVB’s initiatives to take hold in the market, with extremely positive comments coming from many participants.

Alistair Speirs wrapped it up with these words: “At MVB, we don’t come to point fingers and blame, we invite solutions, we find experts to guide, we discuss the best ways forward, and we don’t do it just for money but for the good of the communities and the country. It seems to be making progress. We are pleased.”
