Bali Island School (BIS) is an institution on the island, having provided the community with academic excellence since 1985.Despite the difficulties faced by schools around the world during the Covid-19 Pandemic, BIS’ continued to provide their students with the required education and support through an effective ‘distance learning programme’. Through this, the members of the Class of 2020 were able power through the challenge of their school-end examinations with flying colours.
As an IB (International Baccalaureate®) World School, BIS delivers the IB programme throughout all of their academic stages, Preschool to Grade 12 [Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes]. The programme has grown in popularity in recent years, especially among parents, as it aims to create well-rounded, well-balanced global citizens out of students, through a comprehensive and challenging curriculum.
For the Diploma Programmes, especially for the final two years of school, students are expected to not only take six academic class in different fields, but in must also take a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class and complete an Extended Essay (EE) — both of which broaden their minds and prepare them for higher education (if that is their path). IBDP students must also complete 150 hours of CAS - Creativity, Action, Service (50 hours each) - without which they cannot graduate. This provides students with perspectives outside of mere academia, but an understanding of community and engagement.
So, with the already challenging programme, topped with the additional difficulties of distance learning, BIS is pleased to reveal the results of the members of the Class of 2020, having completed the IBDP:
- 100% pass rate (world average: 80%)
- 32.7 average score (world average: 30)
- 12 out of 15 students received 2 additional points for their TOK and EE
Head of School Mr. Garth Wyncoll was thrilled by the students’ achievements, saying: "Another strong set of results - well earned - through a difficult period. Thank you to our IBDP Coordinator and Secondary Principal for their strong leadership, to each DP teacher for your attention to individual student needs and your strong approach to teaching and learning, and finally to the rest of the BIS faculty and staff for your assistance in preparing our students for the demands of the DP program!”
Furthermore, Mr Garth Wyncoll shared that graduates of the class were also accepted to universities across the globe, including:
