All Saints Anglican Church’s South Jakarta congregation has a new minister. The Reverend Zane Elliott is a New Zealander who has recently arrived in the city, with his wife Karen and their two children. They have been preparing to serve in Jakarta for the past year. First by completing training in Oxford, UK and then three months of language study in Salatiga.
Zane first visited Jakarta in 2016 for a conference and swore he’d never be back. “I’ve visited countries all over the world, but life in the Big Durian just seemed too hard for a Kiwi family” he says. “But, over the next 18 months God was working on me. He helped me recognise that the Kiwi dream, of a house on a quarter acre section, camping holidays, and skiing weren’t good enough reasons not to be obedient to the call of Jesus for his people to work right across the face of the globe.” Eventually he said ‘yes’ to the request of a Kenyan friend (who is now an Anglican Bishop in New Zealand) to apply for the position at All Saints.
“Although my ministry is mainly geared towards expatriates, we already feel like we’ve fallen in love with Indonesian people. We love their warmth, ready smiles, and the vibrancy of life in this richly diverse country.” In time, the Elliott family hope to find ways to connect with the wider expatriate community, and “in some small way we want to be a blessing to the city.”
All Saints Anglican Curch is the oldest English language institution in Indonesia having celebrated its 200th Anniversary in 2019, and has two services, one in its own church in Menteng opposite Tugu Tani statue, and the other in South Jakarta at the address shown below.
