Skal International Jakarta, a travel industry club headquartered in Spain but present in 80 countries around the world, just completed their fourth ‘relaunch’ event after a quiet period during the pandemic. Comprising representatives of the hotel, airline, apartment, conference, restaurant, food, beverage, fitness and related industries including media, the group meets for a fun but informative dinner once a month, usually in a five-star hotel or top restaurant.
Starting March 2022, Skal Jakarta has had four very well attended dinners each with a sustainability theme and an expert speaker., focused on that old but much needed phrase “Build Back Better”.
The March dinner was in Gran Melia Jakarta and focused on the especially important theme for Jakarta of water preservation, management and a brand new autonomous water bottling program designed by PT. PIPA and presented by Didier Peres.
The April Dinner was in The Borobudur Hotel and had Wiwiek Mahdayani, a destination management specialist from Desma, presenting her ideas on creating Jakarta as a better tourism destination. Again a much needed topic.
The May dinner was in Mandarin Oriental Jakarta and focused on sustainability for hotels with guest speaker Simon Pestridge who runs the branding for the exceptional Potato Head Complex in Bali.
The June dinner was hosted by The Hermitage Jakarta and had safety and security consultant Terry Burkin, explaining the implications of ISO 303001 for corporate travel.
Each event was very well attended and as explained by Skal Jakarta President, Alistair Speirs “are all aimed at increasing awareness and oversight on important subjects, but at the same time meeting new and old friends and having a very good time!”
The events all have full 3 course dinner service by the venue and have free-flow wine and beer (kindly supported by Hatten Wines and Heineken) which keeps the evening very convivial. ‘The idea behind Skal is “doing business with friends” explains Alistair ‘we encourage everyone to get to know each other, in fact insist on them introducing themselves to’ the whole group on by one! Our Skal toast is “Friendship, Happiness, Good Health and Long Life!” “Skal” after all means “Cheers!” in Swedish which has been the founding motto for over 70 years”.
Upcoming events will be followed on Energy Saving, Waste Management, Renewable Energy and Supply Chain Management. Skal welcomes all guests who are in industries and professions related to travel & tourism.
