Lies, Fake News and Evil Propaganda

Soapbox: Publisher's Perspective | 15 April 2022

We are going to quickly divert from the upcoming celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ taking place this weekend, to record a serious litany of evil that the world is experiencing. And it all hinges on the sad realisation that facts are no longer facts. They are just words used to gain a (usually) negative purpose: power, lust or money, often all three.

Both true Christians and Moslems celebrate honesty and are judged before God.  But witnessing the blatant lies that the Russians are plying the world with is extremely distressing. We know the media has to allow both sides equal access to their readers but for the Russian Ambassador to Asean to claim in The Jakarta Post that the Ukranians are murdering their own people and that Western media reports are false (when they themselves closed down all free media to prevent their own people hearing the real facts) is sad beyond words. How can anyone live with their guilt when they know their lies cost lives, and are still perpetuating violence today.

Russia invaded Ukraine, not the other way round. Russia is shelling cities in Ukraine, not the other way round. There is no doubt that Ukraine is trying to exert media leverage, but western reporters (Reuters, AFP, BBC, DW, CNN - even Fox) are there and witnessing what are surely war crimes. We are sad that anyone has to support such cowardly deception just for their job.

At the same time we know the USA and UK leaders can, and do also lie. Boris Johnson lied about partying during Covid. Not quite the same as genocide but still a lie. Donald Trump has now been filmed stating quite clearly ‘ I lost the election’ which means he has now spent 17 months lying every day to his supporters, ruining possibly forever their trust in politicians.

Yes, we all lie, but usually the consequences are tiny if at all. But when you are in change of a country you cannot do so, ever.

As we celebrate the life, death and resurrection of  someone who embodies honesty Jesus Christ who said: “I am the truth, the way and the life” (John 14.6).  Let us all pray that his light will shine on all those who are lying and change their ways forever, before it is too late.

Happy Easter to all our Christian friends.
