Jakarta Aquarium offers a unique and engaging marine experience in one fun package while inviting visitors to protect the future of our ocean.
From Taman Safari Indonesia, a multi-award winning conservation institution, Jakarta Aquarium Indonesia (JAI) presents an immersive marine experience rich in both recreational and educational experiences.
This first ever aquarium experience within a mall is located in New Soho Mall, West Jakarta. It boasts a total area of 7,200 sq. m with over 3,598 animals and 354 species and hosts a number of shows and activities for adults and children alike.
Built in an outstanding collaboration with Aquaria KLCC, Malaysia, JAI welcomes all visitors from Jakarta and its surrounding regions in support of their effort to understand the needs of their audiences in order to craft and design more meaningful and adequate programs. In turn, this drives the desire of said visitors to join JAI as they work towards solutions for many global environmental and social crisis the world faces on a daily basis.
Guardians of the Ocean
Above all, JAI is a conservative institution carrying the end goal of inspiring its visitors to take a stand in developing a positive future for our ocean. To reach this objective, JAI employs many interactive activities and educational programs.
JAI shares the Ocean Explorer Guide Book for visiting student groups to add to their immersive aquatic experience and complement the students’ learning. Based on the group tagline, “Explore, Engage, Grow”, the guide book encourage students to explore every possibility and engage with the ocean and its inhabitants in the right way, thus improving their knowledge about life and the ocean.
The Biology Interactive is a fun way for adults and children alike to uncover the mystery of our planet’s diverse aquatic biota. Assisted by highly trained Guest Service Agents, visitors are encouraged to learn about many different marine lifeforms by touch and understand what makes them tick, what makes them so arresting, and why it is important to care about their survival.
About eight million metric tonnes of plastic is dumped to the ocean every year. Addressing this worldwide growing concern, JAI has dedicated an entire zone to promote plastic awareness. Resounding the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” movement, the aim is to support and educate visitors to gradually change their daily habits concerning plastic use.
Activities in this special zone include an interactive games for children, teaching them to sort trash into one of four types of recycling bins. This is a very intuitive way to instill fundamental environmental awareness from an early age.
AQUACAMP, one of JAI’s most popular signature products, is an activity designed especially for children and school groups. This program allows the students and teachers to interact directly with JAI’s experienced Aquarists, Divers, and Veterinary Technicians. The program is designed to deliver a full 24-hour of onsite learning. Quite literally, a chance to sleep with the fishes.
JAI is a strong supporter of the Lautku Bersih program started by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. As such, it invites everyone to learn about the wildlife and marine biota of Indonesia through numerous shows and interactive experiences. The mission is to encourage people to explore the wealth of Indonesia and to support the preservation of our waters in Indonesia and beyond.
Highlighting the institution’s conservative ideology, JAI Director, Mr. Will Owens remarked, “JAI is not just a placement of aquatic animals, but it is an aquatic discovery centre, offering spectacular treats for the public, especially school children. We support and satisfy their curiosity in understanding each animal’s characteristic, adaptation, and survival skills.”
In total, the visitor zones can accommodate up to 2,500 visitors at once. Jakarta Aquarium opens daily, from Monday to Sunday, including public holidays, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
