As part of the company’s expanded community programme, which has started off in the U.S., Starbucks Indonesia has officially opened its first community store to help build a positive economic and social impact.

Taking place in one of Jakarta’s most bustling commercial areas, Tanah Abang, Starbucks Indonesia continues to directly benefit underprivileged communities by creating its first community store in the neighbouring area. Since the very beginning, Starbucks has focused on building and growing the community alongside its business and will continue to expand its global network by having 100 community stores open by 2025.

“Indonesia has a longstanding and proud coffee heritage, which we’ve been incredibly fortunate to share with our customers around the world,” according to Sara Trilling, senior vice president and president of Starbucks Asia Pacific. “One of the most important contributions Starbucks can make in return is serving as a catalyst for positive change in the communities we serve. Over the years, we’ve continued to expand the number of Community Stores in the region including Thailand, South Korea and now Indonesia.”

The Community Store Programme’s mission is to include community spaces to help bridge socio-economic gaps and challenges specific to the designated location. Here in Tanah Abang, Starbucks Indonesia is committed to boosting up low-income communities by adding more local jobs and linking employees with education and career development opportunities, as well as creating social impact initiatives and featuring space for events.

Starbucks will partner up with two local non-governmental organisations, namely Yayasan Komunitas Sahabat Anak and the Indonesian Street Children Organization (ISCO) to create further educational opportunities for youth in Tanah Abang.

With an area of more than 250sqm, the Tanah Abang Community Store will be designed not only as a coffee shop, but it will also house rooms for workshop and classes. In addition, most of the Starbucks employee who work at the store have roots in the Tanah Abang area, therefore they actually represent the community.

“We’ve partnered with Starbucks for more than nine years to ensure a better future for Indonesian children,” says Dian Novita Elfrida, Chairman of Yayasan Komunitas Sahabat Anak. “The Community Store and the active engagement of Starbucks partners and customers will generate many new opportunities for the children of Tanah Abang. We’re extremely proud to help realise a brighter future for the community and the children of Jakarta.”

Moreover, the community store will also help the Indonesian Street Children Organization (ISCO) to provide academic scholarship for dozens of students aged 5 to 15. Established in 1999, ISCO runs programs to support street children who live in poverty to achieve their potential. Today, ISCO sponsors over 2,000 children across 30 communities in Indonesia.
