Every year, the provincial government of DKI Jakarta organises a series of events to celebrate the city’s birthday with a specific theme, cultural performances, and events that have been carried out for generations. This year, the public can enjoy and enliven celebrations on 22 June when the city officially turns 496 years old.

From May, banners and billboards with a white base color reading, Jadi Karya untuk Nusantara have been flying on the streets of Jakarta, building facades, and other crowded centres. Jadi Karya untuk Nusantara which literally translates to ‘work for the Archipelago (nation)’ is this year’s anniversary theme for DKI Jakarta – an uplifting message of unity and solidarity for residents to work as one for their city.

This theme is accompanied by a blue, spiralling meant to symbolise movement, growth, and transformation of the city to become a global business city, and the yellow and red colors which represent optimism, hope, and courage as well as the spirit of Jakarta to face new challenges. The two yellow colors, symbolizing humans, represent the spirit of the synergy of all Jakarta residents in welcoming international performances involving Jakarta as chair of ASEAN and moving the capital to IKN Nusantara, as quoted from the official Jakarta government website.

The DKI Jakarta Regional Secretary Joko Agus Setyono as Chair of the Committee for the 496th Jakarta Anniversary advised that the Jakarta government would like to invite all citizens and anyone who has activities in Jakarta to contribute to the success of Jakarta on a global scale business city by improving quality and preserving the environment. A series of activities for this year’s anniversary has started from 21 May and will continue to  21 July.

“Let’s celebrate the anniversary of the city of Jakarta together and let’s keep protecting this city which will become a global scale business city,” said Joko Agus Setyono, on the launching of the theme and logo of Jakarta’s anniversary on 21 May.

The series of activities that can be enjoyed by Jakarta residents are Festival Jakarta Great Sale (21 May-21 July), Literacy Activities (22 May-22 June), Semasa Pikini at Lapangan Banteng (June 4-6), Jakarta Fair at JIExpo Kemayoran (June 14-July 16), Jakarta Collaboration Festival (June 14-July 16), Jakreatifest (June 16-July 3), Indonesia Comic Con Pop Asia (23-25 June), Monas Week (June 20-25), Kota Tua Community Parade (June 24), Archives Exhibition (June 25-30), etc.
