This year’s Jakarta Dessert Week (JDW) closed its 2024 event with the launching of a brand new awards campaign celebrating the very heart of this culinary festival: sweets and desserts! The Golden Swirl Awards made their debut on 20 October 2024, announcing 13 winners under selected categories.
This was the sixth edition of Jakarta Dessert Week, an event that uplifts and celebrates the city’s dessert makers and venues, from ice cream parlours to viennoiseries, by encouraging diners to discover their limited-edition creations, as well as presenting engaging popups, takeovers and special dining experiences.
With its growing popularity, JDW is set to become Indonesia Dessert Week (IDW), expanding the reach of this wildly successful event to other cities across the country. Another bold move this year has been the introduction of the Golden Swirl Awards, hoping to increase recognition for those who have truly excelled in this culinary niche.
“We are thrilled to launch the Golden Swirl Awards as part of Indonesia Dessert Week’s commitment to celebrating the incredible talents of our dessert community,” said Gupta Sitorus, founder of IDW. “These awards shine a spotlight on the individuals and establishments that have excelled in crafting exceptional dessert experiences, contributing significantly to Jakarta’s culinary prestige.”
The awarding ceremony took place at Urban Forest Cipete, where in the company of their food and beverage colleagues and the larger dessert community, 13 winners under 13 categories were officially announced. Each category was carefully crafted to showcase the diversity and richness of the dessert industry, ranging from traditional Indonesian sweet treats to international dessert delicacies.

Golden Swirl Awards: Judges and Criteria
A panel of 10 judges made up the panel for the Golden Swirl Awards, all of whom come from the food and beverage industry but from different backgrounds. This included the five co-founders of IDW: Gupta Sitorus, Kevindra Soemantri, Tria Nuragustina, Talita Setyadi and Primo Rizky.
The founders were joined by a diverse selection of external judges, including celebrity chefs Rinrin Marinka and Yuda Bustara; esteemed chocolatier Louis Tanuhadi, Director of Academy of Pastry & Culinary Arts Indonesia; popular F&B podcaster and restaurateur, Ray Janson; and Teuku Andre Aziz, founder of TwoRubber, an Indonesian culinary media company.
Each of the venues for each category were judged under a specific weighted criteria, which focused on: (1) Presentation and Innovation: The visual appeal, creativity, and originality of the dessert (2) Flavour and Texture: mastery in flavour balance and texture contrast (3) Quality and Technique: The execution and consistency of the dessert hinting at the chef’s skill and the commitment to high-quality ingredients. (4) Market Appeal: Assessment of the dessert’s potential to satisfy market trends, customer preferences, and its uniqueness in the culinary landscape.
The awards not only creates recognition for those who have so far achieved so much in this culinary category, but also encourages more venues to push themselves and innovate for the year to come, hopefully lifting the dessert scene in Jakarta to even higher standards.
