At ‘Into the Woods’ Exhibit, A Focus on Timber from Japan’s Nara Prefecture

This November, a range of wooden items from Nara Okuyamato Japan will be featured in the ‘Into the Woods’ exhibition at Dia.Lo.Gue, Artspace, Jakarta. The exhibit will explore  wood designs and craftsmanship following the collaboration between designers in Japan and Indonesia.

‘Into the Woods’ is part of an ongoing cross country programme Design Camp @ Okuyamato with Door to Asia which was initiated to suggest design solutions for local businesses in Nara Prefecture, Japan, to be adaptable to the world market. Previously, designers across Asia were invited to work together with designers based in the Okuyamato area.

To connect designers in Indonesia and Japan, the exhibition involves collaboration between designers, architects, content curators, and few Indonesian organisations. Table Six, Grrad, Studio Dasar, and Athina Dinda among them.

The exhibition is slated to be held from 8 to 11 November. The exhibit will also include a panel discussion with the wood masters. Design Camp has selected seven wood makers and two wood companies to present their works and skills at the exhibit. Design enthusiasts will see wooden items, used Yoshino cedar and Yoshino cypress which only can be found at a specific district in Nara Okuyamato, Japan.

On 10 November, the panel discussion entitled “Closer to Nature” will include a discussion on the design production and philosophy using sustainable living and natural approach.

The Japanese wood makers are Ichi, studio Jig, Izuru, Ch Style, Akari Kobo, Applejack, Sky Wood and MoonRounds. Two companies HOUEI and Masuchu are expected to showcase its products. One will get a chance to learn with Nara Okuyamato-based designers who are master their works in implementing Japanese culture, craftsmanship, forest practices, and respect towards nature.
