Evening Lecture: Reflections on the Java War Bicentennial

24 April 2025 - 24 April 2025
Austrian Embassy Jakarta, Menteng

This 20 July 2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the outbreak of the Java War (1825-30) led by Prince Diponegoro. Ahead of this milestone, on 24 April 2025, Oxford historian Peter Carey reflects on the meaning of this anniversary for contemporary Indonesia and the world, in his talk, “Back to the Future: Reflections on the Java War Bicentennial”. The event will take place at Austrian Embassy Jakarta, aptly located on Jalan Pangeran Diponegoro, Menteng.

What can Diponegoro tell us about how to retain one’s dignity and integrity while standing up against injustice and colonialism? What can this period of Javanese history tell us about the face of the future in a multi-polar world? Join this fascinating talk, part of the Indonesia Heritage Society (IHS) ‘Evening Lecture’ program, and discover the nation’s rich history and its rippling effects through time.

Event begins at 6pm.
