Commemoration of the Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda)
The Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda), commemorated every 28 October, is a historic declaration that transformed the spirit of nationalism in Indonesia. This seminal event laid the groundwork for subsequent nationalist movements, serving as a cornerstone for the formation of Indonesian identity.
Formulated during the Second Youth Congress in Jakarta on 27-28 October 1928, this pledge brought together young Indonesians from diverse regional, ethnic and religious backgrounds under one unifying banner: the belief in Indonesia as their motherland, nation and language of unity.
To this day, the Youth Pledge is celebrated as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, remaining a powerful reminder of the collective strength and determination of Indonesian youth, who dared to envision a united and independent Indonesia.
