Spread Across The World: The Indonesian Diaspora in Four Countries

27 January 2023

South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname, New Caledonia are home to some of the oldest overseas Indonesian/Malay communities. This talk introduces the societies of South African Cape Malays and Sri Lankan Malays who were sent by the Dutch as slaves, soldiers and banished princes in 1650s. Then there are more recent communities in Suriname and in New Caledonia who filled labor needs of Dutch colonialism in the 1890s. All four groups have fascinating stories of cultural resilience. David Reeve will share their stories and address if their historic identities are under threat.
