What’s On in Bali this July

WHAT'S HAPPENING | 7 July 2019

Here’s a roundup of happenings, launchings and things of note taking place on the Island of the Gods.

This is Bali’s cultural highlight of the year, where for a whole month (15 June - 13 July) all aspects of art are on display. Everything from traditional dances, costume parades, art displays and exhibitions and musical performances are expected here. It is the best place for visitors and locals alike to witness aspects of local culture otherwise difficult to see or find.

Held annually, Bali Art Festival was first organised in 1979 by the late Professor Ida Bagus Mantra. The main purpose of this festival is to preserve Balinese art, music, and literature, gaining a strong base for national identity. Now, combining emerging international arts with local culture, Bali Art Festival has become the creative event of the year with its parade, exhibition and workshop.

This year’s festival started with its popular parade, which was held at the Bajra Sandhi monument in Denpasar, with the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo opening the ceremony. Events and exhibitions are held at the Taman Werdhi Budaya Arts Centre in Denpasar. Of course, the cultural showcases go beyond Bali and include the vibrant cultures from all around Indonesia.

Established since 2016, Above Eleven Bali stands out as being a stunning rooftop destination with a distinct concept of serving the unique Nikkei cuisine, a harmonious marriage between Peruvian and Japanese food. The rooftop venue recently brought a refreshing urban vibe to the tropical island by appointing Peruvian Eduardo Montes to lead their culinary team as the new head chef. Born in Huancayo, one of the capital areas of Peru well-known as a cultural and commercial centre of the whole Peruvian Andes, Eduardo Montes graduated from D’Galia Culinary Institute in Peru, where he honed his skills and developed his style and cooking technique. He gained a lot of knowledge and experience from working with some of the best Peruvian chefs in the world, including Jaime Pesaque and Rafeal Osterlin, whose restaurants were included in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

The newly appointed head chef welcomes you to experience the refreshed and renewed Peruvian-Japanese cuisine under his new leadership. Head on over to Above Eleven Bali and indulge in the special Discover Peru tasting-menu by Chef Eduardo daily from 4pm - 11.30pm.

The annual summer party of W Bali, SPF, returns this 27 July 2019, bringing Ibiza party vibes to the shores of Bali. Being a summer event, SPF starts at 1pm, allowing partygoers the chance to dance under sun and swaying palm trees. The afternoon vibes will be set by the fresh sounds of W Bali’s resident DJs Victor Goh, Cleave Martinez, CTRL–ALT, Lady Flic and Nanda, building up to another epic Bali sunset to the beats of Damian Saint.

After the sun sets the two renowned international headliners DJ Anja Schneider and Elekfantz will take over W’s luxurious playground and light up the dance floor with their beats, amplified by signature fireworks and light show. This year, the show will be recorded live and shared across W Bali’s and Mixmag’s social media channels. Supporting the opening of W Ibiza, W Bali is capturing the spirit of the Balearic Island with a playful, energetic and bohemian chic “White Heat, Boho Beat” pop-up activation at Woosky, featuring W Ibiza’s signature design elements, tapas and cocktails. Other activities taking place throughout the day will be a special boomerang photobooth and exclusive tote bags on offer, designed by local artist Julien Thorax (TRAX) who will also be reimagining the iconic W Bali sign for the day as a live installation. Don’t miss the opportunity to ‘Sip, Play and Flirt’ at SPF 2019!
