Potato Head Family will soon reveal the latest expansions of their decade-long revolutionary project with the soft launch of Bali's first creative village, Desa Potato Head, in December 2019.
Envisioned as a multifaceted experience that goes beyond hospitality, Desa Potato Head will be a place interwoven by music, art, design, food, wellness and sustainability, providing the local community and guests alike with a newfangled holistic experience.
“At Desa Potato Head we're not trying to change the industry, we want to create an entirely new model for it. If we bring people together for good times but offer them the unexpected, it will open their minds in new ways," said Ronald Akili, Founder of Potato Head.
The Desa (meaning 'village' in Indonesian) already comprises of the brand's iconic Beach Club and Katamama with the final component of Akili's decade-long project being the Creative Centre, distinctively designed in association with Managing Partner, Architect David Gianotten at OMA (Office of Metropolitan Architecture), the Dutch practise founded by Rem Koolhaas.
In addition to the 168 guest rooms, dubbed Potato Head Studios, the Creative Centre also houses an array of integrated facilities, from a farm-to-table restaurant, multiple bars, a multipurpose gallery, an environmentally-focused kids club, various rooftop activation venues, an amphitheatre, an oceanfront pool with daybeds to a music recording studio, a library accommodating the Wild Life Archive, and a cutting-edge underground discotheque developed in collaboration with music legend, DJ Harvey.
The above mentioned expansions will each be revealed throughout early 2020, whilst continuing to add and expand to their all-encompassing programming, including various forms of sound healing, long-table dinners, sustainability workshops, sunset performances and acoustically-driven music events.
The spotlight will be on Potato Head's global and local collaborators during the upcoming soft launch. Conceptualised by notable British designers, Max Lamb and Faye Toogood, each studio room is equipped with furnishings and amenities crafted from recycled plastics and sustainable materials that are executed with the help of local Balinese artisans using native materials and techniques, alongside Potato Head's Sustainism Lab.
“The essence of Bali lies in the interaction between different cultures. Dedicated to both guests and the community, our design for the Creative Centre encourages exchange between different kinds of users and challenges the typical Balinese resort typology that highlights exclusivity,” says OMA’s David Gianotten.
Designed to inspire creativity, all the while championing positive change for a brighter future, Desa Potato Head focuses on community and inclusivity. With a motto of Good Times, Do Good, Akili and his team not only apply this philosophy in the spaces but to the overall guest experience. Guests of Potato Head Studios or Katamama will be given a zero-waste kit consisting of a water bottle, RPET tote bag, bamboo straws and other essentials, along with refillable amenities such as sunscreen, after-sun care and insect repellent.
“We’d like to welcome conscious and curious minds to our visionary utopia; visitors should leave Desa Potato Head with a more imaginative, rejuvenated mindset and we hope they return again and again," said Creative Director, Daniel Mitchell.
Bookings for the Creative Centre and Katamama are now open online at potatohead.co. The fully completed Desa will open in May 2020, whilst guests can start their stay experience at Potato Head Studios starting from Tuesday, 17 December 2019, just in time for the New Year!
Speaking of New Year's, it's not New Year's Eve they’re celebrating, It’s Gou Year’s Eve! World-renowned Korean-born DJ, Peggy Gou, is set to return to Bali's most anticipated New Year's Eve party alongside the legendary DJ Harvey. It’s going to be a round-the-clock experience featuring supporting acts including Bali collective Tantrà, Potato Head resident DJs Pete Herbert and Gero, a gamelan ensemble and the master of ‘Pool Party Music’ Mall Grab —all keeping the party going till the early hours.
